Early in this century, most empirically oriented psychologists believed that all motivation was based in the physiology of a set of non-nervous system tissue needs. The theories of that era reflected this belief and used it in an attempt to explain an increasing number of phenomena. It was not until the 1950s that it became irrefutably clear that much of human motivation is based not in these drives, but rather in a set of innate psychological needs. Their physiological basis is less understood; and as concepts, these needs lend themselves more easily to psycho logical than to physiological theorizing. The convergence of evidence from a variety of scholarly efforts suggests that there are three such needs: self-determination, competence, and interpersonal relatedness. This book is primarily about self-determination and competence (with particular emphasis on the former), and about the processes and structures that relate to these needs. The need for interpersonal relat edness, while no less important, remains to be explored, and the findings from those explorations will need to be integrated with the present theory to develop a broad, organismic theory of human motivation. Thus far, we have articulated self-determination theory, which is offered as a working theory-a theory in the making. To stimulate the research that will allow it to evolve further, we have stated self-determination theory in the form of minitheories that relate to more circumscribed domains, and we have developed paradigms for testing predictions from the various minitheories.

Analog Signal Generation for Built-In-Self-Test (BIST) of Mixed-Signal Integrated Circuits is a concise introduction to a powerful new signal generation technique. The book begins with a brief introduction to the testing problem and a review of conventional signal generation techniques. The book then describes an oversampling-based oscillator capable of generating high-precision analog tones using a combination of digital logic and D/A conversion. These concepts are then extended to multi-tone testing schemes without introducing a severe hardware penalty. The concepts are extended further to encompass piece-wise linear waveforms such as square, triangular and sawtooth waves. Experimental results are presented to verify the ideas in each chapter and finally, conclusions are drawn. For those readers unfamiliar with delta-sigma modulation techniques, a brief introduction to this subject is also provided in an appendix. The book is ideal for test engineers, researchers and circuits designers with an interest in IC testing methods.

I -William James, 1893 We are witnessing today a mounting interest among behavioral and biological scientists in problems long recognized as central to our understanding of human nature, yet until recently considered out of the bounds of scientific psychology and physiology. Sometimes thrown into the heading of "altered states of consciousness," this growing research bears directly upon such time-honored questions as the nature of conscious experience, the mind-body relationship, and volition. Smith realized that there must exist an additional powerful control mechanism behind Great Britain's authority and government, explaining the extraordinary successes of Great Britain. He called this the Invisible Hand. Despite having used this term only 3 times, the idea evokes extreme scientific and political emotions to this day. If we apply a molecular model of computation, such as in in Adleman's DNA computer, a computational model for the Invisible Hand can be built to show how it affects a society. It is a spontaneous, unconscious, distributed, noncontinuous computational process on the platform of minds of, e.g., people or ants.
