Excerpt from Meditations on the Sacraments and Christian Life for Priests and Seminarians"After John had been imprisoned, Jesus returned to Galilee to preach God's Good Message, This was his theme: 'The time of waiting is over, the kingdom of God is close at hand. Change your evil ways; believe in the Good Message.'" Mark 1:14-16.I have chosen as the theme of this meditation the summary of the teaching of Our Lord as given by St. Mark. Generally the biblical scholars agree that Mark didn't wish to express how Christ began to teach. Indeed the first preaching of Our Lord was longer, not just three phrases. Mark wishes to give a whole summary. He wished to show the very structure of the preaching of Our Lord. This is the program of the teaching of Our Lord and it should be the program for this retreat.Jesus began to proclaim the Good Tidings. It is Good Tidings, the Good News, and why? Above all because it is Jesus. "Salvator Mundi", salvation. It is Jesus, the Only-Begotten Son. In the same chapter of St. Mark is contained the baptism of Christ. There the heavens opened and a voice came from heavens "This is My Beloved Son". The Father proclaims from heaven it is My Son, My Beloved to whom you shall listen. So in the text it is clear what is the essence or heart of the message of the Gospel - it is not some messenger, prophet, patriarch or preacher, it is the Word of God, the Beloved Son of the Father. It is the Word that has made the world, it is the Word-made-Man, it is this Blissful Word to whom the Father from all eternity has given all his wisdom, power, and love. It is the Word in which the Father expresses His beatitude, and this is the Gospel coming from God. As better texts say; "Jesus begins to preach the Gospel coming from God." It is the Word Himself, the Son, Who comes. How wonderful were the words of Pope Paul at the beginning of the second session of the Vatican Councils "per Christum solum Dominum"; that the Church in the council will not bring another message to the world but Christ. He is the messenger, but not a messenger as a prophet bringing a message of future times or a message beyond himself. Here we have a messenger Who is Himself the message, beatitude, and salvation. The first attitude, therefore, dear friends, in our whole Christian life and especially during these days of retreat is to listen to Christ and not to watch and to judge the retreat master. "Oculi mei semper ad Dominum". We should be aware that it is still the Lord who brings the Good Tidings, as the Constitution on the Liturgy says, "in ecclesiae Christus adhuc praedicat."About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Prayers and MeditationsHe knew the little books contained nothing contrary to religion, and he was therefore perfectly content to let what was in them go forth. We were all told in our childhood that 'I don't care' came to a bad end. Johnson, I must suppose, is the proverbial exception, for no man cared less than he what people said or might say.Pious authors of the first rank are sufficiently rare to make us thankful for Prayers and Meditations, and Johnson's piety is as indisputable as it is interesting. It represents a type always prevalent among the laity, but exceedingly ill-represented in our literature. It is not the primitive piety of the Early Church, nor is it the Evangelicalism of a later day, still less the 'enthusiasm' of the Methodist Revival. There is something medićval about its gloom something Jansenist about its mysticism, whilst there is not a little of the Eighteenth Century in that 'obstinate rationality' which, as the doctor himself half proudly, half ruefully admitted, made communion with the Roman Church an impossibility for him.Religion to Johnson was an awful thing. He never learnt to take his case on Zion.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius AntoninusIn the year A. D. 135 Emperor Hadrian adopted as his son and successor Lucius Ceionius Commodus, who bore also the names of Aurelius and of Annius Verus. Roman nobles of this time often boasted a long string of family appellations. As a rule only two of these were employed, but the same individual might use a different pair at different times, or the son, for distinction's sake, might use one pair, while his father had used another. Partly for this reason, partly because his pedigree is not given, we do not know exactly who Commodus was. But he would seem to have been related on the one side to the Aurelian house, which drew its origin from Nimes in Southern Gaul, on the other to that of Annius Verus, which came, like Trajan and Hadrian, from Spain. Most probably he was related to Hadrian. Certainly he cannot have been selected on the ground of his personal merits. Commodus was a handsome and gentlemanly debauchee, who had never distinguished himself in any way whatever; and was moreover, at the time of his adoption, in the last stage of consumption. But Hadrian was strongly attached to him.Gibbon and others have spoken of adoption as an excellent method for ensuring the succession of a competent Emperor.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Meditations and Devotions of the Late Cardinal NewmanThe Papers by the late Cardinal Newman contained in this collection were likely, most of them, to have formed part of what he proposed to call a "Year-Book of Devotion" for reading and meditation according to the Seasons and the Feasts of the year. The intention of composing such a book had been in the Cardinal's mind as far back as the early years of his Catholic life, but, though it was never abandoned, various circumstances hindered him from pursuing it, and no portion of this volume was put together with this idea. The book would have varied greatly in the matter of its subjects and in their treatment. For instance, some papers on the Notes of the Church would have formed one subject; of these, excepting some mere preparatory fragments, nothing was written. Again, some sermons would also have formed a part of the readings. A scheme, drawn out by him, of Litanies to run through the whole year shows what he had thought of in that respect, though only the few here printed were put together by him. "The Sayings of the Saints of the Desert" would have been extended over the whole year instead of covering only the few months for which he had prepared them.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
