This atlas provides a selection of operations for intra- and extradural pathologies of the spinal cord and its nerve roots. Pathologies involving the spinal cord threaten the patients´ mobility, independence or even life. Fortunately, the overwhelming majority are of benign nature, so that surgery plays an important role or even represents their treatment of choice. With modern imaging and microsurgical techniques neurological functions can be maintained or even improved for the majority of patients.The content is presented in a standardized fashion: the preoperative history is followed by preoperative images leading to a preoperative diagnosis and surgical strategy. The intraoperative images intend to illustrate individual surgical steps one after the other to guide the reader through each of these operations. Each case is concluded with postoperative images and information on clinical outcome.The atlas features extradural soft tissue tumors, intradural extramedullary and intramedullary tumors, malformations of the craniocervical junction and spinal canal, spinal arteriovenous malformations and pathologies of spinal meninges. The operations selected are meant to provide an overview covering different aspects of each pathology. With more than 1400 intraoperative images this atlas may serve as a reference for neurosurgeons dealing with spinal cord pathologies.

Light-based therapies have been a major component of dermatologic practice. Historically, these treatment modalities have been mainly tailored to the treatment of patients with light skin. Principles governing use of light therapies in skin of color are less defined. However, there is a tremendous need to understand the benefits and limitations of these therapeutic options for dark-skinned patients as well. Demographic data in the United States alone indicate that the population and recipients of health care are rapidly changing with regard to skin phototype. Physicians who are involved in the delivery of care for patients with cutaneous problems that can be addressed by light treatments need to be able to fully understand the mechanisms, applications, risks, efficacy, adverse events, and other pertinent issues in considering treatment options for their patients with pigmented skin.

In evolution, color vision has developed several times independently. The book does not cover all these forms of color vision but concentrates upon human color vision. Data from animal research is discussed for a better understanding of the human visual system. The prerequisite for color vision is the presence of light sensors (photoreceptors) that are differently excited by different wavelengths and a neuronal system that compares the excitation of the different photoreceptors. In the visual system photoreceptor excitation is compared in many different manners. As a result, color vision-being a modality in vision besides other modalities such as visual perception of form, motion, texture, depth etc.-is multi-modal in itself. Color processing takes place in the visual system at many different levels, from the photoreceptors to higher cortical areas.

The book provides a critical analysis of the co-design processes activated in 10 co-creation labs addressing societal challenges across Europe. Each lab as a case study of real-life experimentation is described through its journey, starting from the purpose on the ground of the experimentation and the challenge addressed. Specific attention is then drawn on the role of policies and policy maker engagement. Finally, the experimentation is enquired in terms of its output, transformations triggered within the organization and the overall ecosystem, and its outcomes, opening the reasoning towards the lessons learnt and reflections that the entire co-creation journey brought.
